Gentleman Says: The Man Company's Charcoal Soap

by Ashish Gyan

A Yiddish proverb goes like, “What soap is to the body, laughter is to the soul

One couldn't have merged brevity and truth better than this. The humble Bars of soap have been an integral part of our childhood and growing up years. It was the go-to solution, probably the only solution, of the cleansing regimen. Whether it be a Lifebuoy or a Lux, the occasional Liril or Cinthol, or for that matter the quintessential Pears, which always reminds me of my grandmom, as it has been her soap of choice for almost 20 years now (That's brand loyalty for you), these are our tethers to simpler times.
As we grew up, body shampoos, bathing gels, body spa treatments and everything in between vied for our collective attention as they infused themselves with sometimes exotic and most times inane "natural" herbs and spices and elements. We've all tried it, We've all liked it to a certain degree as well, we've come out of the showers feeling relaxed, a bit more manly, a bit more exfoliated and maybe a bit more nourished as our preferences went.
So when, on one of my e-commerce window shopping sprees, I chanced upon The Man Company's Charcoal soap AND it took me 2 minutes straight to throw my money at them. For the sake of full disclosure, the bar is black in colour and they had me right there. It arrived in a simple yet classy brown paper box and didn't have the slippery quality of other regular soap bars.

Charcoal infused in soap might sound counter-intuitive to some, but as they mention themselves;

"Charcoal and soap might seem like two words that do not go well together, but Charcoal is a tried and tested cleansing ingredient, known for its unique ability to draw out toxins from the body - out the dirt and oils that are blocking the pores!",

And it does a great job of doing just that, in the shower, it works up a nice creamy lather which I prefer to the foamy lather which in recent times have become the norm. Coupled with the activated charcoal element, it does work wonders in giving you a great shower as well.

Crafted for men, this soap comes armed with the oils of coconut, mahua, castor, patchouli, cedar wood and mint and for a moment one might be justified in thinking that this would leave an after effect of an oily layer on the body, but it doesn't, instead it leaves the body feeling soft and nourished without it being dry.

Priced at Rs.250 for a 100 gms bar, it on the higher end of the price spectrum but it could be a worthy investment as taking into account the rate of use vs. soap melting rate, I predict it to run for a month or slightly more even when used on a daily basis as compared to my usual Liril or Pears which lost weight in less than a fortnight.

The description on their website goes on to state:

"Its anti-bacterial properties not only kill germs but also exfoliate your skin. Banish blemishes and toxins, and give your skin a manly glow like never before. Using our Charcoal bar consistently on your face can reduce or eliminate acne, bumps and blackheads. Our Charcoal soap is also a great body bar for an all over skin detox, as well as a wonderful soap for your hands as Charcoal soap can help reduce pigmentation and make your hands look younger."
