Maybelline Velvet Matte by Color Sensational - Mat 6 : Review

Written by: Smriti on:

When Maybelline first came out with their Lip Polishes, I picked up Glam 19 and Glam 9, because the colours were gorgeous, and the packaging was so cute! Lipstick bullet inside a clear case, but oh wait, it's a gloss that unscrews from the other end! I remember being fascinated by it, running to the counter to investigate further :)

The lip polishes are old members of my stash now, and while I'm in love with their packaging, the formula is quite thick and glossy which I feel doesn't suit my full lips the best. So when the Velvet Mattes came out I was as excited as a bunny, but only purchased it a few months ago when it was so marked down on sale, I couldn't resist! Being a beautiful winter shade, it's time I shared it on the blog :)
The only difference between the two product lines is the cap - shiny and silver for the Lip Polish, matte and black for the Velvet Mattes.

The product inside is a soft lip cream, gliding easily on the lips with the petal shaped doe-foot applicator, and dries as a soft matte colour. I would have liked a true matte finish like the Miss Claire lip creams, or the NYX soft matte lip creams, but I can make it work by patting it down with my finger.

As for the shade, Mat 6 was probably the hottest selling variant of the selection, and with good reason! The colour you see through the transparent case however, is not true to the colour translating onto the lips. In reality, Mat 6 is an eye-catching berry fuchsia as a single swipe and can be built up to a richer berry that looks very sophisticated and perfect for the winter months! When I got Pure Amaranthe by L'Oreal, I felt that they looked quite similar, and they are too. The tones are same, but Pure Amaranthe is a brighter, more bubblegum fuchsia in comparison- better suited for summertime. Of course, even its finish is more matte.

The pigmentation is amazing, opaque in a single swipe, and it lasts for a good 6+ hours on me, even leaving a fuchsia pink stain behind which looks pretty on its own, or can be topped with clear balm.

Coming to the most crucial aspect of a matte formula, the wear on lips. I'm happy to say that the formula of Velvet Mattes is comfortable to wear. It is moisturizing in its own right, which explains the 'soft matte not true matte' finish. The product as a whipped, cushion-y texture to it and my lips never feel dry when I wear it.

Overall, neither the colour nor the shade was what I expected, but Mat 6 managed to impress me nonetheless! Recommended!

Price : 499INR for 5ml

Mat 6 is mentioned as Hot Wine on some shopping sites, so don't be confused. It's the same drool-worthy shade you're seeing here!
