Maa's Secret Hair Oils : Bloom & Velvet

Written by: Swati on:

Is haircare a priority on your agenda? I have to confess that my routine isn't elaborate. Shampoo & condition is what I usually do and some days I use a hair serum. If I have some time or want to pamper my hair occasionally, I use a hair mask sometimes. I do however *love* oiling my hair. 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘪 is a quintessential part of ancient Indian self-care & most who have grown up practising this ritual will vouch for its benefits!

Maa's Secret kindly sent me two hair oils to try a few weeks ago & I'm sharing them with you today :

For reference, my hair is : Fine, relatively straight, low frizz. I have a slightly oily scalp which gets itchy often. Ideally, I like to oil my hair once a week.

The brand recommends applying the hair oil 2-3 times a week  (depending on the condition of hair & scalp) &  keeping the oil on for 1- 4 hours. I have used  Bloom 4 times till now & the Velvet twice, keeping it on for around 2 hours each time (usually, I like to keep my regular hair oils overnight....it's just something I have always done).

Both the oils have a green hue and a herbal smell. Bloom smells a lot stronger and I detect a predominant curry leaf fragrance in it. I am quite used to herbal hair oils so I do not mind this at all, but it's something to keep in mind if you have a very sensitive nose or if you don't like a strong herbal smell.

My Experience :

Bloom suited my fine hair strands better.
  • The oil is thicker than my usual ones (maybe because of the castor oil, which is a heavy oil).
  • When I first applied it, I thought it would be difficult to wash off, but that wasn't the case. My hair did not have residue or oil traces post shampooing - I prefer shampooing twice after oiling my hair.
  • My scalp felt nourished & my hair was slightly softer, but not enough for me to skip conditioner or a leave-in hair serum. So whenever I use these oils, I make sure to use a conditioner or a hair serum after shampooing. (FYI - with my all time favourite oil - Kama Ayurveda Bringadi- I do not really need to use a conditioner post wash).

Velvet isn't meant for my hair type, but I wanted to give it a go.
  • It has a lighter consistency compared to Bloom.
  • As expected, it didn't work that well for my hair. But it should suit thicker hair strands better.
  • My scalp felt fine but the post wash softness was better with Bloom.

What I liked & What Could Be Better?

  • I like that they have 2 different variants for different hair types.
  • Both are also available in smaller 100ml sizes for trial.
  • I liked the raw herbal smell of the oils, based on which, the quality felt good to me. However, I would have preferred the complete ingredient list to be shared.
  • The oils claim to help in reducing hair fall, greying, dandruff & promote hair growth. I cannot attest to this yet because:
(a) I haven't used the oils long term
(b) such conditions can have different causes, many of which might require medical intervention & treatment. What I can say is that the oils nourished my scalp. Hopefully, with consistent use, they could help control these conditions as the ingredients used in the oils are known to promote healthy hair.

  • Be a little careful while pouring the oil out. There is a plastic stopper inside, but maybe I didn't pierce a big enough opening or maybe the stopper was loose? It popped out while pouring the Velvet oil & I had a small accident.
