Busy Mornings, Tasty Breakfasts : Chocolate Banana Oatmeal Recipe

Written by: Smriti on:

When I was an intern, more often than not, I'd be running around the hospital at erratic hours fulfilling the call of nurses, PGs DUTY ( have to keep reminding myself that 😛 ).

The first few weeks saw me skipping meals frequently until it dawned on me that at this rate, I'd end up in one of the wards myself! And you know, doctors are the worst patients. So that's how I selected a couple of easy recipes that would come together quickly, keep my tummy full and happy, and also fuel me throughout the day.

Also, they are healthy and that's always a win-win!

Ingredients :

  1. Half cup rolled oats.
  2. 1 cup water.
  3. 1 teaspoon brown sugar (optional).
  4. 2 teaspoons cocoa powder (I used a dark unsweetened variant).
  5. Half ripe banana (sliced). Reserve the rest for later.
  6. A pinch of salt.
  7. Nuts and seeds for topping (optional).

In a saucepan, throw in the oats, water, sugar, and salt. Bring to a boil and then reduce to a simmer. Keep stirring frequently. After 5 minutes add the banana slices and cocoa powder and keep cooking the oats till most of the liquid is absorbed. The oats take about 10 minutes to cook properly.

Taste at this point and decide if you need your oats sweeter, for which choose to add honey as a topping.

Transfer to a bowl and add the leftover banana (sliced if you're feeling fancy, chomped as it is if you're pressed for time) and nuts/seeds/dried berries to your chocolate oatmeal.

Done! Enjoy dessert for breakfast, ladies! Seriously, oats are one of the quickest and healthiest breakfast options and I highly recommend it. Do give it a try and let us know what you think!
