Beauty Of Joseon Ginseng Essence Water

I am a toner & essence fanatic! I started using them regularly a little over 2 years back and my skin couldn't be happier. Obviously, I have tried a fair share of them over time. My combination, slightly dehydrated skin loves the light hydration that toners & essences bring and I cannot imagine my skincare routine without one anymore.
Up today is the Beauty Of Joseon Ginseng Essence Water. I've been using it consistently for a while now and I have lots to share. Read on!

A fresh, nourishing toner enriched with Hanbang (traditional Korean herbal medicine) ingredients for smoother and revitalized skin.
- Ginseng Complex : Ginseng root water 80%, Ginseng callus culture extract, Ginseng root extract, Ginseng berry extract, Lactobacillus/Ginseng root ferment filtrate
- Sebum control & Brightening : Niacinamide 2%
- Moisturizing : Glycerin, Allantoin, Sodium hyaluronate
Ingredients : Panax ginseng root water, Butylene glycol, Glycerin, Propanediol, Niacinamide, 1,2-Hexanediol, Water, Hydroxyacetophenone, Glyceryl glucoside, Xanthna gum, Panthenol, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Allantoin, Adenosine, Panax ginseng callus culture extract, Theobroma cacao (cocoa) extract, Dextrin, Glucose, Panax ginseng root extract, Panax ginseng berry extract, Lactobacillus/Panax ginseng root ferment filtrate, Sodium hyaluronate, Ethylhexyglycerin, Disodium EDTA
- Ginseng has anti-ageing benefits - it can activate blood flow & stimulate the skin. It is also an anti-oxidant & anti-inflammatory - it can help reverse damage caused by free radicals (hyper-pigmentation, fine lines & wrinkles). Ginseng also helps to boost skin radiance.
- Niacinamide 2% - acts as an antioxidant & anti-inflammatory. It provides sebum control, refines pores, supports skin barrier health. It also helps even out skin tone & reduces post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIE & PIH).
- Licorice - helps to brighten skin tone. It is also soothing in nature.
- Panthenol is soothing, also hydrates & moisturizes the skin.
- Allantoin soothes the skin. It also has skin softening & protecting benefits.
- Adenoside helps with wound healing, it has anti-inflammatory properties. It also helps with skin barrier repair & function.
- Sodium hyaluronate adds hydration.
The essence comes in a clear plastic bottle, the packaging is minimal, simple & looks chic. I quite like the style. The product itself has a light amber colour.
- Texture - Lightweight, watery & runny, but has a bit of slip
- Fragrance - It is fragrance-free, but has a very mild herbal scent from the ginseng used.
- Feel - Absorbs quickly, doesn't feel heavy. There's no tackiness. It can be layered easily (I have done 3-4 layers on days when my skin was feeling very dehydrated & it never feels too heavy or greasy. It is also a product that will work all year round.
- Due to its texture and properties, it acts both like a toner & an essence, which is great if you want to keep your routine minimal.
- It hydrates deeply & my skin feels plump and supple immediately. It also makes my skin looks less dull & adds a healthy glow whenever I use it consistently.
Keep in mind that it has fermented ingredients, which might not suit everyone, especially those prone to fungal acne (folliculitis). I cannot say how much it will help with fine lines & wrinkles, but it hydrates the skin well which makes the fine lines appear less prominent. Any hydrating product will do that.
Note
- With Ginseng : the older the root, the more effective and potent it is & more expensive.
- Beauty of Joseon uses cultivated ginseng instead of wild ginseng and they do not mention the age of their ginseng at harvest time. Cultivated ginseng is less expensive but it has less benefits too.
I am not sure what kind BOJ uses, but since they do not disclose these details, they might be using young ginseng root & maybe an inferior quality? This is purely an assumption & based on what I have read other people spectulate.
- Some brands like Sulwhasoo are particular about the type & age of the ginseng used - around 6 year old wild red ginseng. Which is why their products are quite expensive too.
- Beauty of Joseon was fined by The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) in Korea over their claims and quality of the ginseng they used in their Ginseng Snail Repair Serum, as you cannot make anti-ageing claims with non-medicinal grade ginseng.
Please bear this in mind if you decide to use it. I'm not saying you won't get any benefits, but it will be foolish to compare it to a Sulwahsoo product & expect the same effectiveness in terms of results, wouldn't it? I cannot compare it to Sulwahsoo, I haven't tried anything from them yet. This is just based on assumption.
Price : Around 1700 INR for 150ml (price might differ slightly depending on where you are buying it)
If you keep expectations realistic, the Beauty Of Joseon Ginseng Essence Water is a lovely product at a good price point, if you want to try out ginseng. It is soothing, calming, hydrating & refreshing. It will work for most skin types and with consistent use, it definitely reduces dullness. Despite the controversy, I really liked the Ginseng Essence water. I am almost done with my first bottle and will most probably repurchase it.
