Avene Cleanance Gel

Face washes/Cleansers are a vital part of any skincare routine. Although it takes only a minute, cleansing is one of the most important steps and lays a strong foundation for efficient skincare, and a splash of water at the end of the day isn't enough. We had spoken in detail about cleansing HERE, in case you want to read more.

As important as the cleansing step is, finding the right cleanser for your skin type is equally important - something that will clean the skin effectively but won't strip it. You know that squeaky clean stretchy feeling? Yeah, we need to avoid that, even if it feels very satisfying.

I have tried a fair amount of face washes over the years, and only a few of them have made the cut. One of them is the Avene Cleanance Gel. When it comes to French pharmacy brands Avène is a well-known name. The first product I had tried from them was back in 2015 - their iconic Thermal Spring Water reviewed HERE. It still remains an essential part of my stash even today.

This cleanser was featured it in my Products I Repurchase video. I am on my 3rd bottle & I think it is a good time to share my thoughts on it. Read on!

It gently cleanses your skin with its gentle cleansing base.
Mattifying : Monolaurin (patent pending) regulates the hyper production of sebum.
Soothing : Avène Thermal Spring Water provides soothing and anti-irritating benefits. It leaves the skin clean, clear and refreshed.
Especially for oily blemish prone skin.

Ingredients:
Avene Thermal Spring Water (Avene Aqua), Water (Aqua), Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isethionate, Zinc Coceth Sulfate, Polysorbate 20, Sodium Cocoamphoacetate, Ceteareth-60 Myristyl Glycol, Peg-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Citric Acid, Disodium Edta, Fragrance (Parfum), Glyceryl Laurate, Green 5 (Ci 61570), Sodium Benzoate, Sodium Hydroxide, Yellow 5 (Ci 19140), Zinc Gluconate

Zinc Gluconate has been shown to be effective against inflammatory acne. Zinc is antibacterial, has sebum regulating properties, stimulates antioxidant enzyme systems & helps in wound healing.  I have used Zinc in my skincare before in the form of a spray - La Roche Posay Serozinc, which is a fabulous product! This cleanser comes in a transparent plastic bottle with - a flip-top cap for the 100ml, a twist cap for the 200ml and a pump for the 400ml. The aqua colour looks quite pretty, doesn't it? The gel comes out pretty much colourless though & is runny.

The gel has added fragrance, a bit stronger compared to my Kama Ayurveda Rose Jasmine cleanser. I have become used to it over time. Fragrance doesn't bother me too much unless it is very very strong & since cleansers stay on the skin for a short duration anyway I am not very picky.

It works effectively for my combination skin. It cleanses gently without drying or stripping my skin. I tend to alternate between this & my regular Kama Ayurveda cleanser - so I end up using it 2-3 times a week or on days when my skin is feeling more grimy or oily than usual. I cannot say that it stops breakouts completely, I don't expect a cleanser to do that either, but since the gel isn't harsh on the skin it allows the breakouts to heal gently & it helps in calming down small spots. I didn’t experience any skin irritation, dryness or tightness, peeling or flaking. I wish I had given this a go back in my college days.

Being a soap-free/SLS free gel (I prefer my cleansers to be SLS free & suggest that you try it too), it does not foam much - which is a good thing. It will take off regular skincare, sunscreen and light makeup residue easily. I would however recommend doing a double cleanse if you are wearing makeup or waterproof sunscreen.

It is also paraben-free. I am not strict about parabens in skincare products - they are not harmful and get a bad name unnecessarily. But I am mentioning this point in case you are particular about it.

Price : 870 INR for 100ml ; 1510 INR for 200ml ; 2100 INR for 400ml

In my opinion, this is an excellent face wash especially for oily to combination skin types & for those who are prone to acne & breakouts. Unlike most of the cleansers aimed at oily breakout prone skin which tend to strip the skin leaving it dehydrated & dry, this is gentle yet effective. The claims aren't outrageous and it does exactly what it says. The price can feel a little steep for a face wash but given the quantity used per wash, one bottle lasts for a long time - my 100ml bottle lasts about 3-4 months with once a day use.
