Random Things About Me : Smriti's Edition

Written by: Smriti on:

Ever since Swati did her 30 Random Facts, she has been pestering me to do the same. Not only is it fun, she said, it also gives our community a glimpse into the person we really are.

And they break the monotony of the blog too.

So here I am, penning down the little quirks that make me, me. I haven't decided on a particular number that I want to share so make sure you click on that 'Read more' button to find out how far I went!

1) I was a huge Barbie girl as a kid. I'd play 'Ghar-ghar' for hours and rope in Swati as well to help enact various scenes. All my dolls were dressed in custom-made haute-couture, the designers being my Mummy and two adorable Mausis.

2) I never tidied up after playing. It drove everyone crazy and 99.9% of the time, Swati was coaxed into returning everything to its proper place 😄

3) I was a Team Famous Five. I hated anyone on Team Secret Seven. I loved George and her relationship with Timothy. I've wanted a dog ever since. She also inspired my long-lasting pre-teen tomboy phase when I'd only wear jeans and sneakers and t-shirts. (Oh wait, I still do that.. O_O)

4) My favorite fantasy book as a child was The Magic Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton. That was till Swati introduced me to Harry Potter at the age of 6 or 7. Her "Wingardium Leviosa" and "Hum Gryffindor, tum pakka Slytherin" got me intrigued. I've been a Proud Potterhead ever since.

5) I read the entire LOTR trilogy at the age of 10, during a winter vacation. Every other fantasy book I've read since then pales in comparison.

6) My sister and I used to fight over who gets to read the new Harry Potter book, to the point where our mother had to intervene and make a schedule. After that it was a race for who could finish first! I miss those good days..!

7) Swati's beloved pet parrot Rupu actually abhors me. I have no idea why! I've had a hateful parrot at my heels from the age of 6!

8) My biggest fear is chipkali (gecko). They creep me out. They give me the shudders. I've had one fall on my head btw. Needless to say I screamed my lungs out and shampooed 5 times immediately.

9) I loved Anime cartoons. Pokemon, Cardcaptors, Digimon, Beyblade, Dragon Ball Z, Avatar... I was hooked. No matter how hard I try, I can never like the cartoons aired these days, chee! Others that I loved included Swat Cats, Captain Planet, Dexter's Laboratory, Powerpuff Girls, Heidi, Jungle Book, Scooby Dooby Doo, Tom & Jerry, and Simba.
I still watch these on Youtube! (Guilty pleasures!)

10) As a kid, my aim was to become a veterinarian and work in the Australia Zoo, or in Africa as a wildlife rehabilitator. I was fascinated by Late Steve Irwin (but not when he touched lizards), RSPCA documentaries and Animal Planet in general.

11) I chose MBBS when my family said "Gai-bhains ka doctor nahi banna hai!"

12) I do not know how to ride a bicycle. Or any other two-wheeler, or four-wheeler for that matter. I'm 22 (do not judge!)

13) My roll number in school was 13. I was never unlucky. In fact, all the teachers used to like me!

14) My one and only BFF since Nursery until now is Anamika. That girl is my lifeline ❤

15) I had a boggling combination of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Economics in 11th and 12th grade. Even the Principal and teachers couldn't understand my choice!

16) The first life lesson I learnt in college was the number of frenemies is always going to be much larger than the actual enemies. People can act all buddy-buddy, yet be the most spiteful beings you can ever imagine!

17) I don't have a 'favorite dish' as such. I've liked home-cooked meals as far as I can remember, my mother is an excellent cook.

18) Papdi however, makes me go weak in the knees. There's only one vendor in my hometown I go to since childhood and he creates magic with papdi and a piping hot aloo-matar masala, and the right amount of onions, perfect seasoning, topped off with loads of tamarind juice......... *dies, and goes to heaven*

19) In a family known for its sweet-toothed members, I'm the black sheep. I'll take salty and sour any day over sugary food. If I had to pick one sweet, it would be Dudhauris made by my Naniji. She can give every halwai a run for their money.

20) Litti chokha and chicken momos are my winter pleasures. You really need to taste my Mom's cooking! Also, my answer to all hunger pangs are mushrooms. I've eaten it 3 times a day for 5 continuous days because my Dadaji indulged me so.

21) I'm a herb fanatic. I like to grow them, cook with them, use them as potpourri... anything. Before I left for college I had different culinary basils, parsley, thyme, sage, rosemary, oregano, bok choy, leek, celery, lettuce in my little herb garden. I'm waiting for the day to settle down and kickstart this hobby again. My aim is to grow lavender!

22) I'm a tiny bit OCD when it comes to cleanliness. I had to change rooms in the hostel because the inmates were just... *shudders to remember fungus growing on used utensils* I too have a system, and nobody messes with that system.

23) So with that you must have figured out I'm a FRIENDS fan! Hi-five!

24) I own a lot more clothes to sleep in than I do for going out. I think that's self-explanatory.

25) I'm a petite 5ft girl, but I never felt the need to glue stilettos to my feet. What's the big deal? I'd rather skip around in flats than hobble along in heels!

26) I read the Twilight series and didn't like it. I even read the 50 Shades series and didn't like it. I did however like Bahubali..! I know, even I'm amused 😜

27) Between makeup and skincare, I'll always choose skincare. I wish I could tell my teen self the importance of that.

28) I'm not religious but I am spiritual. Religion's only serving to be a cause of conflict these days and it deeply saddens me. My beliefs are eclectic, and I especially hold Vedic knowledge in reverence.

29) Home is the most important thing in my life, not just the place, but the emotion of it. I'm a true Cancerian, and it reflects in all my thoughts and actions. I'll cease to function if I know my home is disturbed.

30) I'm nearing the end of my UG degree. Right know, I should be studying for exams but... It both scares and exhilarates me that in a few months time I'll be a doctor. There's pride in getting through med-school, but the future's like an abyss... This blog is my rock amidst that, all of you are the best for sticking with us through all these years!

Phew, I made it to 30!!!
I feel like I can go on, but let's leave it at this. Maybe in another post, another time.

So, was I what you expected or something else entirely...?
xoxo
